What Size?
The very best way to gauge size is the head circumference. Weight is provided in the chart too, as a guide.

The overall circumference measurement of your dog's noggin at the largest point is the best determination of size, because if you choose a size too large, the muffs won't seal well against his head, and you lose all the sound-reducing properties you were shooting for.

The circumference is the measurement that would create a circle by going across the top of the dog's head, over the ears, and under the chin.

Your dog's weight is also a good indicator of which size to choose.

What about really long ears? Cropped ears?
The dog’s ear flap should be folded down over the opening of his ear canal. (This, in itself, provides a natural barrier against sound). Dogs with really long ears, such as basset hounds and poodles, should have the ear flap hang below the muff. The vinyl-wrapped foam seal is very soft and won’t pinch. For dogs with erect ears, like German Shepherds... as long as you can fold his ears down without causing distress, then he should be quite content wearing the Mutt Muffs. It is cautioned against using Mutt Muffs on young puppies with erect ears. Give that cartilage a chance to form first. Adult dogs should have no problems. If, because of cropping, the ears will not fold downward without discomfort, Mutt Muffs are not for you.

How do I train my dog to wear them?
Surprisingly, as soon as the dog figures out they make life more comfortable, there’s very little training involved. The most common scenario is that the dog gets his Mutt Muffs off during flight once, then realizes he very much wants them back on, and never attempts to take them off in flight after that. Some dogs, of course, will not tolerate them. About 2.6% (according to returns)

Do they work for fireworks?
Customers who have tried, say yes! Relief from fireworks noise is a perfect application for Mutt Muffs. Thunderstorms? Results are mixed, with about 1⁄2 reporting success, and the other 1⁄2 reporting no significant relief. Thunderstorms are different than fireworks, in that fireworks is strictly noise. Thunderstorms have factors other than noise, which could be stressing out the dog, i.e., the wind, dark
stormy skies, and a drop in air pressure.

Decibel Reduction?
Based on the materials used, it is estimated that Mutt Muffs provide decibel
reduction in the neighborhood of 25-28 dB. This is in the normal human hearing range. At higher frequencies, that dogs can hear and we cannot, the reduction is even greater, because the higher the frequency, the more easily it is absorbed.
The fit is very important. Without a good seal against the dog’s head, you will lose most of the decibel reduction.
